The Orpheum definitely closed out their 2022-2023 season with a Bang! Beetlejuice is a thrilling combination of haunting and whimsical from start to finish. Based off of Tim Burton’s 1988 classic, this musical adaptation gives fans of the original source material a hearty helping of that dark, twisted story-line while revamping the comedy with a current twist. You’ll laugh, you’ll be shocked, you might cry if you’re feeling a certain way that evening, and you will certainly be entertained.

We follow the wacky interactions of the “newly deceased” Maitlands and their new lot in life. Megan McGinnis and Will Burton fully embody the quirky couple persona of Barbara and Adam. They are quickly introduced to their “guide” to the Neitherworld, Beetlejuice, who tries to get them to help him on his quest to reek havoc on the mortal world. Matthew Michael Janisse played the titular character on the first night and brought the charisma to this smarmy icon. The performance that really wowed me was Isabella Esler making her professional debut as Lydia. Esler brought the vocal chops and pulled heartstrings in all the right ways as she longs to get reunited with her mom in the afterlife. Kate Marilley and Jesse Sharp round out this cast as Delia and Charles, who keep the comedy rolling.
The sets are vibrant, the transitions seamless which really kept the story moving. Not a dull moment in this show. The athletic ability and acrobatics of the ensemble made for a fun spectacle scene after scene. Don’t miss out on this unique Broadway experience.
Beetlejuice runs from September 19th-24th. Tickets can be found at the Orpheum box office 612.339.7007.
