A fresh take on one of Sondheim’s most beloved musicals, this Company revival is well worth the watch. Stunning set design, stellar performances, and smart, seamless story updates work in harmony to create a show that is funny, poignant, and as relatable now as the original was in 1970.

The technical elements in this production are understated and appealing; they never distract, but always support. The scenic design by Bunny Christie is sleek and clever, as is Neil Austin’s lighting design. Each simple set piece brings the characters into sharp focus. Each visual transition is smooth and effortless, aiding the flow of the story and keeping the audience engaged in every moment.
Brittany Coleman as Bobbie is the lifeblood of the show. She’s exceedingly charming—by the end of the first number she already has the entire audience wrapped around her finger. She also succeeds spectacularly in every moment that requires deep emotion, letting the cheery mask slip to reveal that raw loneliness so integral to the story. Her gorgeous performance of “Being Alive” is as heartbreaking as it is vocally impressive.
Matt Rodin as Jamie is another standout. “Getting Married Today” is one of Sondheim’s most iconic (and challenging) songs, and Rodin absolutely does it justice. Their frantic, frenzied energy and impressive comedic chops make this number a highlight of the show. Rodin strikes a perfect balance of sympathetic and ridiculous, earning our laughter and compassion in equal measure.

There are no weak links in this cast. Every actor is engaging and believable from the moment they take the stage until they take their final bow. Company is playing at the historic Orpheum Theatre in downtown Minneapolis from now through November 19.
