Lyric Arts’ production of Merrily We Roll Along is a beautiful, grounded take on one of Stephen Sondheim’s most structurally experimental works. Director Scott Ford’s clear artistic vision shines through in every scene. He doesn’t shy away from adding his own interpretation to the piece despite its popularity, which can be a difficult line to toe with such a well-loved show.

Scenic Designer Greg Vanselow, Projection Designer Brady Whitcomb, and Lighting Designer Shannon Elliot did a wonderful job with the visual elements of this productions. The set design—minimal and sleek—supports the story without distracting from it. Clever use of projections and sparse set pieces place the characters in their own world while allowing the audience fill in all the minutia for themselves.

This production boasts an incredibly well rounded cast. You can’t pull of a show like this without a very talented ensemble. Natalie Dulka, Brooklyn Klekamp, Nykeigh Larson, Catherine Maki, Charlie Morgan, Brandon Osero, France A. Roberts, and Joshua Row are the backbone of the production. They work together seamlessly, weaving between and around different characters, storylines and time periods to create a solid, vibrant world for the “main characters” to inhabit.

Maureen O’Malley is fantastic as Mary. She brings so much heart to this show—it’s impossible not to fall a little bit in love with Mary thanks to O’Malley’s poignant performance. Noah Hynick as Charley offers much needed levity throughout the show with his top-notch comedic timing without sacrificing any of the emotional depth of his character’s storyline. Faith Winship Smith (Beth) is another stand-out. Her beautiful vocals and deeply affecting acting choices are a real highlight of the production.
